Traders began smuggling out trees and plants that grew the spices and seasonings and planting them in other countries so that they could compete directly with the existing spice merchants and sell their spices and seasonings much more cheaply because they didn’t have to be imported. Once other countries could grow their own spices the spice trade quickly became insignificant.
Spices and seasonings these days are relatively inexpensive because they are much more common and much easier to find.
